Giving Up System Admin Duties

Since the mid-eighties, I’ve maintained some sort of online presence that required one of my computers to be constantly connected. It all began with a PC linked to a 14.4 US Robotics modem running Wildcat BBS. This platform hosted "Federation Space" and "Civil Servant," where I also operated as a FidoNet Node (1:151/135) and participated in networks like photonet and policenet. Those early days were a fascinating blend of technology and community, where each connection felt like opening a door to a new world.

As the internet grew, so did my presence. I transitioned from running a BBS to using early ISP services to host a personal webpage. Eventually, I set up my own Linux server and registered domains, starting with timbrown.net for blogging and later adding performancepixel.com to showcase my passion for photography. At one point, I shot numerous charity events and uploaded images for participants to view and share. These sites became a way to blend my technical skills with creative pursuits, connecting with others through stories and visuals.

Over time, however, my priorities shifted. I began shooting less photography, even for personal use, and blogging started to feel like it no longer justified the effort required to run and secure a server in today’s increasingly complex internet environment. Hosting your own server has become more challenging, with ever-present concerns about security, uptime, and maintenance.

That’s why I’ve decided to simplify. Instead of hosting my content on a personal server, I’ve established a Blogger presence and redirected my domains to it. If you arrived here via an internet search or an old link from timbrown.us or performancepixel.com, welcome. While the content you were looking for isn’t here—at least not for now—I’m exploring ways to reimagine my online presence in a way that fits my current lifestyle and interests.

Thank you for stopping by, and I hope to share more updates with you soon. If you’ve been part of my online journey over the years, I appreciate your support and look forward to connecting in new ways.
